“Marvelous Life in the Salt Marshes” A talk
and walk
with award-winning children’s book author, nature
photographer and naturalist Doug Wechsler FREE program
presented by the Atlantic County Library System
Atlantic County residents are lucky to have
huge areas of salt marsh nearby. But, have you looked
closely to see what lives in these flooded meadows? Doug
Wechsler has and he will give you an up-close look at salt
marshes and their residents. He will explain why they are
so important to us, as well as to the wildlife that inhabit
them. Wechsler will also talk about the process of
creating, writing and photographing his new book, Marvels
in the Muck: Life in the Salt Marshes. Afterwards we
will walk with Wechsler to a real salt marsh at the Edwin B.
Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
Doug
Wechsler is Director of VIREO (Video Resources for
Ornithology) at the Academy of Natural Sciences. VIREO is
the most comprehensive bird image bank in the world.
Contributors to the collection include some of the world's
most talented wildlife photographers. (www.ansp.org/research/vireo/).
Doug has
written 22 children's books. His next book, Marvels in the Muck: Life in the Salt Marshes,
Doug paddled into numerous tidal marshes with his wife,
Debbie, and his camera, photographing diamondback terrapins,
clapper rails, and hoards of fiddler crabs. The book will be
published in November 2008. He is also developing the web

Kenneth
Hart’s
first book, Uh Oh Time, was selected as winner of the
2007 Anhinga Prize for Poetry. He teaches writing at New
York University, works in the family roofing business, and
gives readings and workshops for the Geraldine R. Dodge
Foundation. His poems have appeared in numerous publications
and his book reviews appear regularly in Journal of New
Jersey Poets.
J.C. Todd
is the author of What Space This Body (Wind
Publications) and two chapter books, Nightshade and
Entering Pisces. A recipient of numerous awards and
scholarships, her poems have appeared in APR, Paris Review,
Prairie Schooner, and on Verse Daily. She has edited
translation features The Drunken Boat and teaches in
the Creative Writing Program at Bryn Mawr College.

Peter Murphy
is the author two books, Stubborn Child (2005), a
finalist for the 2006 Paterson Poetry Prize, and Thorough

Renée Ashley
is the author of three volumes of poetry: Salt (Brittingham

Lost Wings. She has received fellowships from the NJSCA
and the NEA and served as Assistant Poetry Coordinator for
the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; currently she is
co-poetry editor for The Literary Review, and on the faculty
of Fairleigh Dickinson University's MFA Program in Creative
Writing.
Catherine Doty
is the author of Momentum, a volume of poems from
CavanKerry Press, and Just Kidding, a collection of
cartoons from Avocet Press. Her work has appeared in
numerous magazines and anthologies, among them Garrison
Keillor's More Good Poems for Hard Times and Billy
Collins' 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day.
