Creative Sparks: Outsider Art, Ages 6-12, $4/child, $4/adult Pre-register to ensure your spot. Drawing inspiration from our “Outsider” art exhibition Awakenings: Art and Healing, we will be creating our own unique artworks. Outsider art has been defined as art created by individuals with no formal training in art, and who were often unfamiliar with art history. After discussing Outsider art (and showing some examples), we will make mosaics based on the colorful works of David Kime.

Watercolor Workshop – En Plein-Air (Outdoors) with Marie Natale, Adults, $65 members, $75 non-members A supply list will be provided Pre-register to ensure your spot. Meet talented watercolor artist Marie Natale at The Noyes Museum of Art for a plein-air watercolor workshop. First, Natale will discuss various watercolor techniques. Afterwards, we will paint landscapes around Lily Lake on the beautiful wooded grounds of The Noyes Museum of Art. Bring a bag lunch.

Exploring the Art of Papermaking with Winnie Radolan, Adults, $35 members, $45 non-members + $10 materials fee (Reg. deadline: Tues., Sept. 23) Papermaking has long been a substrate for all kinds of written communications. It is also a relatively new and developing art medium. Learn how to form sheets of paper, layer colors, include found objects, and create your own "paintings" in paper pulp. No experience necessary, just an open spirit of adventure.

“Marvelous Life in the Salt Marshes” A talk and walk with award-winning children’s book author, nature photographer and naturalist Doug Wechsler FREE program presented by the Atlantic County Library System Atlantic County residents are lucky to have huge areas of salt marsh nearby.  But, have you looked closely to see what lives in these flooded meadows?  Doug Wechsler has and he will give you an up-close look at salt marshes and their residents.  He will explain why they are so important to us, as well as to the wildlife that inhabit them.  Wechsler will also talk about the process of creating, writing and photographing his new book, Marvels in the Muck:  Life in the Salt Marshes. Afterwards we will walk with Wechsler to a real salt marsh at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.

Doug Wechsler is Director of VIREO (Video Resources for Ornithology) at the Academy of Natural Sciences.  VIREO is the most comprehensive bird image bank in the world. Contributors to the collection include some of the world's most talented wildlife photographers.  (www.ansp.org/research/vireo/).

Doug has written 22 children's books. His next book, Marvels in the Muck: Life in the Salt Marshes, Doug paddled into numerous tidal marshes with his wife, Debbie, and his camera, photographing diamondback terrapins, clapper rails, and hoards of fiddler crabs. The book will be published in November 2008. He is also developing the web site, www.SaltMarshLife.com.

Doug’s photography can be seen in Audubon, National Wildlife, Natural History, and in numerous other publications ranging from National Geographic to The National Enquirer, and in hundreds of books, exhibits, web sites, and calendars around the world. Poetry Reading and Booksigning with Kenneth Hart and J.C.Todd, Free with regular admission, members free (Pre-registration requested)

Kenneth Hart’s first book, Uh Oh Time, was selected as winner of the 2007 Anhinga Prize for Poetry. He teaches writing at New York University, works in the family roofing business, and gives readings and workshops for the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. His poems have appeared in numerous publications and his book reviews appear regularly in Journal of New Jersey Poets.

J.C. Todd is the author of What Space This Body (Wind Publications) and two chapter books, Nightshade and Entering Pisces. A recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, her poems have appeared in APR, Paris Review, Prairie Schooner, and on Verse Daily. She has edited translation features The Drunken Boat and teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Bryn Mawr College.

Wednesdays, October 15 & November 5, 7 – 9 pm

Your Life: A Memoir Writing Workshop with Peter Murphy, $30 mbrs., $35 non-mbrs. (Reg. deadline: Thurs., Oct. 9) Put your life into words by concentrating on a few individual memories. You will get started with short readings and stimulating writing prompts, then practice basic revising techniques to embellish your narratives making them more genuine and interesting. You will leave with a list of resources to keep you writing and some suggestions for publishing your work.

Peter Murphy is the author two books, Stubborn Child (2005), a finalist for the 2006 Paterson Poetry Prize, and Thorough & Efficient (2008), both from Jane Street Press. He has published poems and essays in hundreds of journals, teaches writing part-time at Stockton and directs the annual Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway in Cape May and other programs for writers and artists. www.wintergetaway.com/murphy.html

Batik Workshop with Linda Brick, Adults & teens 16 & up, $35/members, $40/ non-members + $10 materials fee  (Reg. deadline: Fri., Oct. 10) No special skills required, just a spirit of adventure: this is an easy, fun class where you can create a beautiful piece of batik art on fabric. Experiment with the dye colors and wax to create something original for yourself or a beautiful gift for someone special. Linda will be bringing an assortment of templates to work with. You will be working with messy fabric dyes, dress appropriately.

Poetry Reading and Booksigning with Renée Ashley and Catherine Doty, Free with regular admission, members free (Pre-registration requested)

Renée Ashley is the author of three volumes of poetry: Salt (Brittingham Prize in Poetry), The Various Reasons of Light, and The Revisionist's Dream, as well as a novel, Someplace Like This, and a chapbook, The Museum of Lost Wings. She has received fellowships from the NJSCA and the NEA and served as Assistant Poetry Coordinator for the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; currently she is co-poetry editor for The Literary Review, and on the faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University's MFA Program in Creative Writing.

Catherine Doty is the author of Momentum, a volume of poems from CavanKerry Press, and Just Kidding, a collection of cartoons from Avocet Press. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, among them Garrison Keillor's More Good Poems for Hard Times and Billy Collins' 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants and honors. Cat currently teaches sixth-grade language arts at Millburn Middle School.

Introduction to Decoy Carving with Fred Reitmeyer, Adults, $30 members + $10 materials fee, $40 non-members + $10 materials fee (Registration deadline: Nov. 10) Master decoy carver Fred Reitmeyer will introduce you to the tools & secrets of this traditional New Jersey coastal artform during this 3-session workshop.  The class will cover the types of knives used for particular birds, carving knives will be ordered, birds eyes & carving techniques will be discussed and implemented. Glass Painting and Fusing Workshop with Ken Leap, Adults, $40 members + $20 materials fee, $50 non-members + $20 materials fee payable directly to instructor (Reg. by 12/4) Learn about the mysteries of fusing colored glass & glass painting techniques with talented artist Ken Leap.  A wonderful hands-on exploration of creative expression in glass. This popular class will be small to allow for plenty of one-on-one interaction with the instructor. Once fired in the kiln, the 6” X 6” glass tiles will be mailed back to the workshop participants.
