Noyes-of-the Month October 2008
Fred
Winslow Noyes, Jr.
Bouquet with Black Band
Oil
on canvas
Collection of The Noyes Museum of Art
1999.007.162
In
Memory of Joe & Eleanor Engleke
The
impasto technique and loose brushstrokes seen in
Bouquet with Black Band are reminiscent of the
Impressionist style. Fred may have also been influenced
by Japonism, as is evident in the painting’s flat
perspective and limited light source. We also see Fred’s
geometric tendencies, commonly found in his later works,
emerging in the shapes of the flowers and background
print.
This
work may have been completed early in his artistic
career when he was most influenced by his studies.
While the date of this painting is unknown, it is signed
on the back with Fred’s nickname “Fritz” Noyes.
