The Estell family were French Hugenots who came to North America in the late 1600s, fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They settled on land in northern New Jersey and later purchased 20,000 acres in what is now Estell Manor. This exhibition tells the multi-faceted history of the family, and the successsion of industries and businesses they profited from using the natural resources of their land. Learn about the fascinating stories of the early days of the Estells, the succession of industries that took place on their estate, and the political power of New Jersey’s first female mayor, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston.
