Take a trip back in time on the “Estell Empire” tour! Visit the Estell family’s former estate, factory ruins, old cemeteries, and more. A great opportunity to take photos, learn local history, and see the beautiful landscapes of South Jersey like never before! Travel to FIVE little-known locations in South Jersey as historian Carl Farrell tells fascinating stories about the early days of the Estells, the succession of industries that took place on their 20,000-acre estate, and stories about the political power of New Jersey’s first female mayor, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston.

The tour departs from Stockton’s Kramer Hall in Hammonton at 12:00 pm. Please pack a lunch, snacks, and wear comfortable walking shoes!

This tour is in conjunction with the exhibition “Estell Empire: Ships, Settlements, Suffrage and Society,” on view at The Noyes Museum Galleries at Stockton’s Kramer Hall from March 13 to May 23, 2020. Opening Reception: April 16, 2020, 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Noyesmuseum.org

The Estell family were French Hugenots who came to North America in the late 1600s, fleeing religious persecution in Europe. They settled on land in northern New Jersey and later purchased 20,000 acres in what is now Estell Manor. This exhibition tells the multi-faceted history of the family, and the successsion of industries and businesses they profited from using the natural resources of their land. Learn about the fascinating stories of the early days of the Estells, the succession of industries that took place on their estate, and the political power of New Jersey’s first female mayor, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston.
