Big Prints Club

  • Noyes Arts Garage 2200 Fairmount Avenue Atlantic City, NJ, 08401 United States (map)

This club meets throughout the summer of 2023 at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University on Friday afternoons to work on a collaborative woodcut project. The finished blocks will be printed with a steamroller at Touch-A-Truck in Downtown Hammonton, Sunday, August 27.

Steamroller printmaking is a popular modern tradition often used in community events to produce enormous prints. Instead of using a traditional printing press, the drum of the steamroller will run over the block covered in blankets. This is the first time that our staff has ever attempted the process, so we are inviting interested members of the community to join us in preparing and troubleshooting!

This club invites those curious about printmaking and experienced printmakers alike to work towards our summer goal: to produce beautiful, large-scale woodblock prints. We will be developing a single-color image, transferring the image to the block, and carving the block throughout the summer.

There will be man vs. machine element to the Big Prints club. While one block will be carved by hand throughout the summer, the other block will be a vectored image that will be carved by a CNC machine. Ten sets of carving tools will be available for use during the club, first-come, first-served. Otherwise, participants or experienced printmakers are welcome to bring their own favorite woodcut tools.

We will be focusing on the use of line to create dimension and interest for these single-color relief prints, as well as innovative digital methods in art-making.
