Cape May based artist Cheryl Patton Wu is being featured in a solo exhibition titled Cheryl Patton Wu: A View From Home highlighting her fabric collages based on personal memories focusing on the South Jersey landscape.

The exhibit’s opening reception will take place from 6:00-7:30., Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Noyes Galleries at Seaview Hotel, a Dolce Hotel by Wyndham, 401 S New York Road, in Galloway, NJ. Live music by CJ Sooy and refreshments will be available during this free, open to the public event.

Cheryl Patton Wu is a fiber artist who is currently living and working in Cape May, New Jersey. Her work focuses on the creation of fabric collages that are based on personal stories of memory and place, with an emphasis on the South Jersey landscape.

Cheryl describes the philosophy behind her body of work: “My body of work explores memory and place viewed through the lens of abstraction. I am fascinated that concepts such as change, movement, and flow exist easily in nature but can be complicated concepts for humans to grasp. We embrace or fight change. We can initiate movement or remain stationary. When we are in the flow things happen with ease. Until fairly recently my landscapes were void of human existence. Now I am introducing shadows into the works, in particular, the human body’s shadow on the landscape”.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, Cheryl Patton Wu went on to earn a BFA from Syracuse University (Major in Ceramics’ Minor in Fiber) and then an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (Fiber and Fabric). Cheryl’s art reflects the influence of her travels to areas such as Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Ann, Cape Cod, Fenwick Island, Virginia Beach, Nags Head, and of course the Jersey Shore, primarily the shore regions of the Atlantic coast.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries including the following: Stockton University Art Gallery, the Arts & Innovation Center of Rowan College South Jersey, the Kay Daugherty Gallery at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Marlin Gallery at Camden County, Manifest Gallery, and the Perkins Center for the Arts.
