This year Raymond Tyler, our Black Art Matters curator along with several other organizations will honor 9 great women who are leaders and creators in the world of arts and culture. Also being recognized for their contributions to arts and culture are one great women’s run podcast and two women’s organizations.
Each year during women’s history month, we celebrate the women that enrich arts and culture in Atlantic City and Southern New Jersey.
This year’s awards recipients are…
Patrice Hawthorne-Recording artist, music educator and community giver. Miss Hawthorne has also toured, appeared on national TV and recorded as a member of the legendary R&B duo Peaches and Herb.
Annette Smith also known as Brown Sugar-Is a soul music disc jockey and radio personality. She continues to keep soul music alive and has interviewed almost every major Soul and R&B recording artist.
Joyce Hagan-Has served the Atlantic City Community as a The Executive Director of The Arts Foundation. Although now retired , she continues to champion for the arts community here in South Jersey.
Shoanne Seijas-Has worked for the past year as Membership & Programs Manager for The South Jersey Cultural Alliance. Seijas has made contributions to advance arts and culture for people of color, Indigenous People and members of communities of all genders and sexual orientations.
April Williams-Is a talented recording artist from Philadelphia. Although living in Philly, April has lent her talent to the people of Atlantic City and South Jersey for more than ten years. April has performed at charity events such as toy drives and back to school events and also donated funds as well as talent and time.
Nettie Long-Is a South Jersey recording artist. Nettie Long is an accomplished music producer, poet and vocalist. Nettie has performed in Atlantic City as part of shows with rapper Doug. E Fresh and our own Angela Burton. Nettie Long also produces a podcast to help support survivors of sexual assault.
Pamela Fields-Has worked in the field of culture and business for more than 10 years here in Atlantic City. She is a Stockton University Professor that currently teaches a business course for women.
Anne Taylor Glapion-Is an accomplished visual artist and filmmaker. She is also a board member of The African American Heritage Museum of Southern , NJ.
Sip and Discuss - Michelle Moseley and Khalidah Hunter- Ms. Hunter is an author of more than 4 novels. Michelle Moseley is a poet, short film/video creator and performer. The two have come together to create the exciting, fun and informational podcast Sip and Discuss. This sophisticated podcast touches on relationships and information about mental health and many more topics.
The South Jersey 40 Plus Double Dutch Club- The 40+ Double Dutch Club is a unified sisterhood that exists to empower women in mental health and physical fitness, all while inspiring them in friendship, fitness, fun, and fellowship! The national club is featured in the film Beyond The Ropes which can be viewed on Tubi.
The Links, Atlantic City Chapter. The support of the arts can be traced to our cultured co-founder Margaret Rosell Hawkins. Her innate artistic talent, discovered at a young age, earned her a four-year scholarship to the Women’s School of Design, later known as the Moore Institute of Art. The Links of Atlantic City are currently sponsoring an exhibit at The Noyes featuring artist Michelle Foster-Lucas
Bring the whole family out to meet and celebrate these phenomenal women that have enriched the cultural community of South Jersey.
The Black Arts Matter Programming came about as a way to celebrate the artists in the community that have been marginalized. The Black Arts Matter programs seek to explore social justice through arts and bring artists to the Arts Garage that may not have felt welcome or had access.
Admission is free and there will be a light offering of food and beverage. We strongly suggest that you RSVP.
