Film: Sunshine Row – The Story of Chicken Bone Beach
In 2025 ArtC Films premiered its documentary about the legendary Chicken Bone Beach in Atlantic City and the Chicken Bone Beach Foundation led by Henrietta Shelton.
‘Sunshine Row - The Story of Chicken Bone Beach’ is a homage to the historical segregation of African Americans on Atlantic City’s world famous beaches. Use of the beach was limited to the area surrounding Missouri Avenue. In a colloquial nod to the most popular leftover from many beach picnic baskets on the avenue, the term “Chicken Bone Beach” became synonymous with this famous stretch of beach in Atlantic City. For over a dozen years, and driven by the groundbreaking efforts of its founder, Henrietta Shelton, CBB has promoted remembrance while celebrating the embracement of all races! CBB’s symbolic vehicle, Jazz, a uniquely American music form, was chosen as a beacon of America’s “melting pot”, drawing upon the founding roots of many groundbreaking African American artists, and ever evolving through the continuing contributions of musicians of all races.
At a ceremony in June of this year, Chicken Bone Beach officially became part of the New Jersey Heritage Trail with a ceremony and the unveiling of a plaque at Missouri Avenue. This event was documented by ArtC and will be part of the updated documentary to be shown this December.
Film: Sandman
For much of John Gowdy’s crowded life, he has conducted an experiment into the limitations of sand. The variations, the possibilities of shattered quartz—not melted into glass, for a bottle or a bowl, but linked grain to grain in a compressed fusion of statuesque beauty. By bucket, by brush, by knife and trowel, John is a sand sculptor, one of the best in the world. Just as a box of words can be arranged into a novel, John—often assisted by his talented wife Laura—can carve a pile of sand into any shape his mind can envision. His imagination has expanded sand’s prior limitations.
In 2026 ArtC is producing a thirty‐minute documentary about world champion sand sculptor, artist and event organizer, John Gowdy. He is a world-class artist specializing in professional sand sculpture displays of all kinds. He has teamed up with his talented wife, Laura Cimador, to form a unique sand sculpture company known as Sand Sculptures by John Gowdy & Co. (SSJG). They are based in southern New Jersey and travel the world through their art. Their motto is "If you can dream it, we can make it in sand"
John has also organized major sand sculpting events including the very successful World Championships of Sand Sculpting in Atlantic City in 2013 and 2014. These events featured 20 sculptors from around the world and over 200,00 viewers each year. It was also documented by the ArtC Film team.
The documentary will tell John’s story with insightful interviews, new footage, historical photos, graphics by Bill Milnazik, a narrative written by Sterling Brown and great video and photos captured by ArtC as well as John Gowdy’s team.
