Artist Statement
“I’m always the subject of my artwork, as I’m always the subject of my dreams and nightmares. This series started with a dream about the Greek Myth, “Leda and the Swan.” This story alludes to the dangers inherent in temptation. It talks about the cyclical nature of history, the ushering in of a new era, and the possibility of gaining knowledge and power even from violent and horrible events. The shared political and cultural events of the pandemic- the horror and the isolation- have led me to question sensual, alluring images. I feel horror reaching into my new work. I accept the need to embrace the terror as well as the complexity and beauty of our time. This digital artwork is done by using video, painting, digital prints, gilding, and silkscreen. Gilded surfaces symbolize dreams and the world on the other side of the looking glass where the extraordinary exists.” - Suzanne Reese Horvitz
