This “heritage collage” workshop explores storytelling through mixed-media collage with historical imagery. Learn about the discovery and legitimate use of historical images, observe a demonstration, and view artwork made by the artist instructor. A hands-on session follows, covering the use of mixed-media collage including examples of methods and projects as well as reference materials for the classroom. For grade 1-12 educators and all levels of artists.
Workshop topics will include:
Lecture and presentation highlighting storytelling through mixed-media collage
Visual storytelling: Discovering and refining the story you want to tell
Researching and finding contemporary and historical imagery for re-use in an artwork
Practical demonstrations of working methods: Colors, materials, and techniques of mixed-media collage
Using examples of collage through history to teach
Hands-on studio work in basic collage exercises useful for all students
Presenter: Lavett Ballard is an artist, educator, art historian, curator, and author whose work has been included in literary, film, and theater productions, as well as exhibitions nationwide. As an artist-archivist, Ballard recalls and reclaims the history of people of African descent.
